“Art, Beauty, and Chocolate”

Share/Save/Bookmark

Looking for a creative way to spend the upcoming Valentine’s Day weekend?  In need of a little self-indulgent massage or manicure to relax and prime yourself for the night out with that special someone?  Want to give your sweet-thing sweets made locally?  If you answered yes to any of those questions (or, for that matter, even if you answered no to everything), you should head over to Barreiro Salon & Day Spa, located at 3103 Mount Pleasant Street, NW, next Saturday, February 13th between 2 and 6 p.m. for a special event, ”Art, Beauty, and Chocolate.”

Pueblo Viejo Gallery.

“Art, Beauty, and Chocolate,” is an event brought to you by a team of local, small businesses entrepreneurs, Sandra Escobar (The Cacao Tree) and Ramona Arias (Barreiro Salon & Day Spa).  Escobar and Arias, self-described “Latinas with plenty of spunk and creativity,” have united their creative business endeavors together just in time for the sweetheart holiday.

The event will showcase a recently opened art gallery, “Pueblo Viejo,” which has opened on the first floor at the Barreiro Salon & Day Salon building.  According to Escobar, the gallery features ”a wonderful collection of artwork from some renowned Latin American artists.”  In addition to the art, Arias plans to offer fantastic discount coupons during the event that provide $20 off a facial or massage at the spa.  Escobar’s “The Cacao Tree” will have chocolate on hand (but if you can’t make it to the event, you can always order the chocolate online by clicking here).

Arias’ spa offers a variety of personalized services, including nail services, waxing, facials, massages, and more.  Escobar’s chocolate is more than just tasty treats, they are tiny works of art.  She has said that chocolate making “allows for a form of expression, a meditative outlet and sensory experience.” Her artisanal chocolate has been featured in DC Luxury Magazine and the National Journal (to read the articles, link to them on The Cacao Tree homepage).  The latter article was about her visit to the White House last February, where she shared her edible art with President Obama and the First Lady.  Undoubtedly, she helped to make their first Presidential Valentine’s Day a little sweeter.

Both Escobar and Arias aim to help make Valentine’s Day 2010 more beautiful and sweeter for the rest of us.  Next Saturday, come out and help support a couple of local businesses.  I hope to see you at “Art, Beauty, and Chocolate.”

Strolling Around Silver Spring, Maryland

I took a little stroll through Silver Spring to capture a few images for a planning report.  The purpose of my adventure was to locate a few relevant images that would show some of the housing stock in Montgomery County (i.e. single-family detached houses and row-homes).  While out and about, I couldn’t help but notice some of the littler creatures in the residential area.  Take a look:

Watch Food, Inc.

If you have a Netflix account and high speed internet, I strongly suggest you watch the film, Food, Inc. (2009).  The film is now available for immediate viewing on Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” option.  I’ve said before that the national dialogue is taking place and I can’t think of a more enjoyable or efficient option for being better informed than by watching this short film (only 94 minutes).  Go to!  You’ll be better equipped for the dialogue.  And don’t forget to tell your family and friends.

Happy 254th birthday, Wolfgang Amadeus!  This birthday news came to me through my favorite online music station, All Classical FM.  I thought this tidbit of news presented me with a great opportunity to give a quick plug to this wonderful, Portland, Oregon-based public radio station.  They provide a constant, nearly-uninterrupted stream of great, easy-listening music. Mozart and all the greats are immediately available to help soothe your mind with the simple motion of a quick click!

Lessons from a yogurt top

Share/Save/Bookmark

I just peeled the foil lid from my organic, Stonyfield-brand rasberry yogurt.  On the bottom of the lid it reads: “You could conserve 1.7 trees and 700 gallons of water over 5 years, while also preventing greenhouse gas emissions, by reducing your junk mail.  Imagine what we could conserve if we all reduced our junk mail.”  The lid’s top reads, “Help stop the waste, while keeping your mailbox free of junk.  Visit Stonyfield.com to learn how.”

Curious I went.  I eventually found the page I was looking for and read up on how I could reduce my junk mail, which directed me to the more helpful website of a group, Eco Cycle.  If you are annoyed by unwanted junk mail, Eco Cycle provides numerous tips and suggestions for ridding yourself of nuisance mailers.  Take a look!

I miss “the way I see it”

Share/Save/Bookmark

I purchased a tall coffee from Starbucks today.  I didn’t bring my reusable mug with me this time so I was provided with the standard paper cup.  This is the first time in months that I bought a coffee from Starbucks and I noticed that the little conversation starter series, “the way I see it,” is no longer printed on their paper cups.  Too bad.  I will miss the free thought that came with my costly and tasty, hot cup of joe.

Here is an example of a quote featured on the printed cup:

“”Do not kiss your children so they will kiss you back but so they will kiss their children, and their children’s children.” –Noah benShea, Poet, philosopher and author of Jacob the Baker, Jacob’s Journey and Remember This My Children.

Happy New Year!

Share/Save/Bookmark

To all my friends and all the readers out there:  happy New Year!  My wife and I are enjoying a nice bottle of Champagne with my crabmeat-stuffed salmon and brussel sprouts dinner.  Our puppy, Jasper, is enjoying a choice smoked bone while laying under the kitchen table.  Things here are well.  2009 was fine, but I really look forward to 2010.  I wish the best for everyone in the new year.
