A Case of Stark Contrasts

A homeless shelter sits right next to where I live in a “luxury” apartment unit at Highland Park.  The shelter is essentially a collection of trailers connected to a small, nondescript building on top of an otherwise vacant lot.  In addition to the shelter, there are many homeless people hanging around and sleeping on nearby streets and sidewalks.  Recently, I have been in and out of the house a lot more often during the day and I have been increasingly struck by the character of this very stark spatial contrast.  It’s striking that I comfortably sit in my apartment building above expensive restaurants and right next door all these men and women sleep on the streets.  Many sleep on the sidewalk.  Some sleep in wheelchairs.  One man sleeps in his wheelchair while wearing a leather coat embroidered with a U.S.A. flag on the sleeve and the word NAVY on the back.

  1. A couple of times I’ve had people ask me for extra fries through the window when I’m sitting at Five Guys.
